Physical Education

Three credits of Physical Education are a requirement for an Alberta High School Diploma. Physical Education courses help to develop the foundation for active living and lifetime physical fitness. Students will be empowered to make self-motivated choices in respect to lifelong recreational pursuits and will develop a foundation of knowledge in personal fitness, wellness, and leadership. To support students who are unable to take regularly schedule Physical Education courses, we offer unscheduled options. We offer a variety of options in sport performance, fitness, and health. Our Fitness Centre has been newly renovated and is a state-of-the art facility. Bellerose offers a variety of student-centered opportunities for fitness, health and wellness.

 

PEPhysical Education 10
(5 credits

 

 

Physical Education 10 is an “activity based program” with emphasis on attendance, participation and a positive attitude. Our students will participate in a variety of creative and innovative individual and team activities that may include, but are not limited to, the following: indoor lacrosse, team handball, aquatics, fitness programs, gymnastics, martial arts, rugby, wrestling, golf, bowling, outdoor pursuits, and the Grade 10 Rookie Camp. Students enrolled in Physical Education 10 will complete the Heart Saver Program.

This is a compulsory course for High School Graduation

FITNESSThis course provides flexibility for those students who wish to participate and continue in lifelong fitness. This Physical Education class will be scheduled to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue fitness but who have either full timetables or timetable conflicts, for example, students who received Physical Education via Summer School, International Baccalaureate (IB) students, and Sports Academy students.

Prerequisite: 3 credits in Physical Education 10.

Physical Education 20
5 Credits with 1 Additional Credit
for Outdoor Education *

 

In this course, students will continue to focus on lifetime fitness and wellness. Students will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of fitness activities, providing a base for lifetime fitness. These activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: individualized fitness plans, Police Fitness Test, fitness boot camp, golf, yoga, dance, karate, team handball, and ultimate Frisbee. A games unit will include volleyball, basketball, soccer, and broomball. A number of short excursions and day-trips are scheduled. A sixth course credit is earned for successful completion of Outdoor Education.

Physical Education 30
5 Credits with 1 Additional Credit
for Outdoor Education *

OUTDOOR EDPhysical Education 30 may be used as a post‑secondary entrance course in numerous Physical Education and Recreation Faculties. At this level, students will focus on the development of leadership and team building. Students will participate in the planning and implementation of a number of Physical Education activities such as the Mini-Olympics, peer teaching, and the Wilderness Excursion. This course may include, but is not limited to, the following: curling, golf, canoeing and kayaking, wrestling and combative sports, broomball, sledge hockey, wall climb, scuba, cycling, fitness programs, and a games unit. One credit is earned for successful completion of the Wilderness Survival Excursion.

Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in Physical Education 20.

Personal Fitness I, II, III

This course is offered to any student wishing to participate in the development and attainment of personal fitness goals in consultation with our certified fitness centre staff. This course combines theory and practical applications from three Career & Technology Studies (CTS) modules:

Sports Education 15, 25, 35
(5 credits each)

Sports Education is a locally developed course designed for students who wish to learn more about the world of sport and athletics. Students who are interested in pursuing careers in fitness, personal training, the Faculty of Physical Education, or coaching would benefit from enrollment in this program. The curriculum includes the following components: Sports Psychology, Fitness Programs, Coaching & Officiating, Leadership in Sports, Sports Ethics, Sports Nutrition, and Sports Injury.
