Physical Education

3 credits of Physical Education are a requirement for an Alberta High School Diploma. In addition, at Bellerose, students are encouraged to continue with an involvement in the Physical Education Program to develop the foundation for active living and lifetime fitness. Students will be empowered to make self‑motivated choices in respect to lifelong recreational pursuits and will develop a foundation of knowledge in personal fitness, wellness, and leadership. The BCHS Physical Education Program is a provincially recognized “Ever Active School.”

 

Physical Education 10
(3 or 5 credits)

 

Physical Education 10 is an “activity based program” with emphasis on attendance, participation and a positive attitude. Our students will participate in a variety of creative and innovative individual and team activities:  indoor lacrosse, team handball, aquatics, weight training and fitness, gymnastics, martial arts, wall climb, rugby, wrestling, golf, bowling, outdoor pursuits, canoeing and kayaking, and Grade 10 Rookie Camp.

Physical Education 20
(3 or 5 credits)

 

Physical Education 20 builds on the Physical Education 10 Program with a focus on the development of lifetime fitness habits and health. There is a strong emphasis on experiences in alternative environments.  Students will also participate in a variety of individual and team activities that promote interest and motivation: orienteering, camping, skiing, canoeing, curling, beach volleyball, martial arts, wrestling, boot camps, and Mission Impossible.  Physical Education 20 students are required to maintain a fitness and activity logbook.

Fees: 5-credit  $40.00


Physical Education 30
(5 credits)

 

Students will pursue competence in personal fitness and active living. There continues to be a strong emphasis on lifetime activity skills and experiences in alternative environments with academic components.

Students will participate in a variety of individual and team activities at an advanced level: orienteering, camping, backpacking, skiing, canoeing, golf, wall climb, aquatics and scuba diving, dance, games, weight training and fitness, soccer, indoor lacrosse, team handball, gymnastics, martial arts, wrestling, cycling, and rugby.

Physical Education 30 students are required to complete a peer‑teaching assignment and written assignments. In addition, they will demonstrate a commitment to the program by completing 10 hours of service in a leadership activity related to fitness and sports.

Physical Education 30 can be used as a university entrance requirement in Physical Education Faculties.

Sports Education 15, 25, 35
(5 credits each)

 

Sports Education is a locally developed course designed for students who wish to learn more about the world of sport.  This course is available by application to the Physical Education Department Head.  The curriculum includes the following components:

  • Sports Psychology

  • Sports Nutrition

  • Sports Injury

  • Fitness Programs

  • Sports Ethics

  • Coaching and Officiating
